Miscellany – Vol. 2

Welcome to Miscellany! This is a weekly download of the things that I’ve been wearing, eyeing, enjoying and loving this week. You can expect a new Miscellany every Saturday morning, and the round up will always be a little bit different!

This week’s list features four categories: To Wear, To Drink, To Read, To Watch. In To Wear, I’m sharing a few bags that either were or are at the top of my wish list (if they “were,” you know the wish came true). In To Drink I’m sharing my go to end of summer scotch cocktail and a little of the history behind it. In To Read, I’ve got a series that I’m currently rereading and devouring. And finally, in To Watch I share my thoughts on the Bo Burnham’s poignant Netflix special, Inside. Enjoy!

TO WEAR

This Room Shop Vintage Orange Bounce Bag. This is one of two bags I’m featuring this week, as I’ve been a little bag obsessed recently. I’ve been enjoying colors that are outside of my comfort zone this summer, and this bag is a favorite in that category. It’s made of satin, with an elastic handle that means the more you have in it, the more it elongates. It’s super cute, and a really fun pop of color for any neutral outfit. Room Shop Vintage is also a favorite destination of mine for scrunchies, and a woman-owned small business. Wins all around.

This Petit Kouraj Butter Yellow Mini Fringe Bag. This is at the top, top, top of my wishlist right now. I’ve been having a yellow moment recently (another color not in my traditional palette). This is a fun one, and (once acquired) will be my second Petit Kouraj bag. I have this same bag in the black-blue-lime color way and it is a show stopper. I’ll link that one below as well. Petit Kouraj is an all around excellent brand to know, as the founder is based in Brooklyn but the bags are handmade with love from Haiti. You can read more about the brand and it’s fabulous founder, Nasrin Jean-Baptiste, here. I have a dream of owning enough of these to do a feature wall in a future walk in closet– they’re truly art pieces in addition to being fashion.

P.S. I also found two other color ways that are going on my wishlist while looking for a link to the butter yellow, so you are welcome.

TO DRINK

This Scotch Cocktail. The phrase “scotch cocktail” is probably blasphemy to most, but everyone who has ever tried this drink in my presence has been astounded at how freaking good it is. It’s called a Mark Twain, named after the author who reportedly wrote his wife to explain that he was enjoying this drink in the morning and before bed.

Here’s how we make them at home:

  • 2 oz The Balvenie 12 Yr Doublewood Scotch (this is our absolute favorite, but is also great neat or on the rocks!)
  • .75 oz simpe syrup
  • .75 oz fresh lemon juice
  • A few dashes of Angostura or other aromatic bitters

Shake together with a few ice cubes, and strain into a chilled rocks glass. Enjoy! Let me know if you like it!

TO READ

This Series About Faeries. I’ve been rereading Sarah J. Maas’s Court of Thorns and Roses series in order to refresh my memory before reading the latest book released this year. Throughout my reread I’ve been recommending it nonstop to friends who haven’t read it yet, so consider this my recommendation to you. If you like fantasy with a little romance mixed in, please do yourself a favor and check out this series. It’s stupidly fun.

TO WATCH

This Comedy Special. We watched Bo Burnham’s comedy special Inside on Netflix and wow, I was not prepared. It is so incredibly poignant and captures a lot of the feelings of the past year really beautifully. It’s dark and unnerving at times, but we related to so much in it. And his song “30” has been stuck in my head since viewing as I also had a pandemic 30th. I cannot recommend highly enough, even though I felt called out by “White Woman’s Instagram.” I’ve been a Bo stan for a long time and this is one of my favorite works of his of all time.
